As we have mentioned before in other blogs we believe that printing a photo on canvas is a perfect and unique Christmas present idea. However they also make the best presents for almost any other occasion. You should consider a canvas print for:

*Birthday presents - The neutrality of a photo on canvas print means that you can choose the photo to perfectly exactly match the level of relationship that you have with the recipient of the gift, you can pick the photo ranging from a special shared moment with your girlfriend right through to a wild night out with friends, a photo on canvas print can provide lasting memories.

* Wedding gifts – Whether the bride and groom have just got married or the couple got married years ago, a digital print on canvas is a perfect present and will always be loved and talked about. Go to their Flikr wedding album, get that fun photo of the two of them looking happy and in love, logon to www.bluehorizonprinting.com.au upload the photo or email us at photos@bluehorizonprinting.com.au a week later they’ll be hanging their photo on canvas on the wall. Now that is a thoughtful present!

* Retirement presents – you can surprise a long-standing member of staff by presenting them with a canvas print. A well chosen canvas print will immortalize the memory and provide a long lasting present that can be proudly displayed at home. Sourcing the perfect image and then using photo printing on canvas to create a retirement gift that’s out of the ordinary makes their departure memorable and special.

* New baby gifts – One of the most popular styles of photo that we print on canvas is those of new born babies. Taking a great new baby picture and printing it onto canvas is the perfect way to celebrate a new life and makes a lasting memory of a special moment in time. A baby photo on canvas is a great gift for those members of the family that live far away and can’t see the new baby as much as they would like, Nan’s and granddads for example would love a canvas print.

* Housewarming gifts – Set yourself apart from the crowd when selecting a house warming present, don’t bother with the sandwich maker or coffee machine. Photo printing on canvas allows you to give them something special – a landscape print of the nearby beach they have moved to or favourite holiday photo will be a present that will be used, it will take pride of place in their living room and they’ll remember that you gave it to them.

Next time you are looking to buy a unique, well priced present look no further than a photo on canvas. Call us on 1300 632 332 or logon to www.bluehorizonprinting.com.au .

Long after the line itself is a lost memory, the Bondi tram will retain a place in the Australian language. In some future age, maybe a space traveller will say to a companion: ‘What’s the new rocket ship like, is it fast? ‘To which the other will doubtless reply: ‘Fast? I’ll say! It shoots through like Bondi tram…’

Last of the Bondi trams

People may have forgotten the origin of the phrase and whether or not it started with steam or electrics is an argument rather irrelevant to this story. To find the beginnings they’ll search dusty files for the story of Australia’s most famous tramway that began when Queen Victoria sat on the throne of England; when ‘Tea Gardens’ was the name for Bondi Junction and Bondi Beach, an expanse of deserted surf and empty sand hills.

If they look far enough they’ll find that there once was a steam tram that did ‘shoot through’ – reputedly at speeds of up to 50 mph (80km/h). Every weekday morning it sped from Bondi with its load of commuters bound for the city -a plume of steam drifting in the breeze, cars rolling like ships on an ocean swell, starch-collared businessmen solemnly consulting their watches and having a quiet wager as to whether or not they would beat the ocean street tram to Mark Foy’s corner. In the late afternoon the process was reversed.

Bondi tram travellers first glimpsed the ocean on May 24th 1884 when anew track, branching from the established Waverley route at Bondi Junction opened as far as Denham street corner. An extension on 29th August 1887 took it to the headland above Tamarama beach to serve the new Bondi Aquarium, which awed the crowd with a couple of vast man-eating sharks.

The zenith of the steam tram age was at hand when the line finally reached down the hill towards the pounding Pacific rollers. No pavilions, no milk bars, cafes or bottle shops; the trams terminated on a balloon loop with just a water tank for replenishing the boiler. Drivers warned to ‘watch out for sand drifts across the rails’.

The service began on the 19th of February 1894. A fourpenny fare (cheaper than the sixpence to Coogee Beach) bought a 35 minute ride covering the 5¾ miles (9km) from Bridge Street. But the would-be traveller needed to be on time, for at the start of the service,, one tram in the morning and one tram in the afternoon was the whole weekday schedule.

Last of the Bondi trams

Summer weekends were a different story. Thousands packed the steam trams to picnic, sniff the ozone, let children paddle in the ripples; but they certainly did not bathe, for only lawbreakers or crackpots entered the surf in daylight. Push-up motors stationed at Bondi beach boosted the three-car holiday trams over a 1-19 grade through the rock cutting to Denham street, while on the outward run another pusher might be needed to assist on Barracks Hill between Darlinghurst junction and the Ocean Street siding.

Historian Gil Hayman recalled the introduction of the ‘Fishing special’s’ ‘taking the fishermen by express trams to the old Bondi terminus, near the top of Bellview Street, Tamarama. The fish tram left the city at 10am. Fishermen would board with their gear and spend a day on the ricks with rod and line’.

Steam was in its final golden era then. Express ‘mail’ trams were in operation to Bondi, Waverley Cemetery, Coogee beach, Botany, St Peters, Dulwich Hill, Abbotsford, Leichardt, Balmain and Glebe Point. The Bondi Expresses of up to four cars ran from the Aquarium to Upper Tamarama pausing at Bondi Junction, Paddington Post office for mail) then Ocean Street until reaching the city. They had first and second class accommodation and the road was kept clear by timetabling the all-stop trams to be refuged into loop sidings to let them pass. When the crowded holiday trams left Bondi Beach at dusk, they went belching fire as they chugged up the grade, giving watchers a foretaste of hell, a regular prelude to Dante’s Inferno.

The steam trams helped to build Bondi into a densely populated suburb, and to encourage the culture of surf worshipping that has never ceased. In some ways one can blame the Bondi steam tram for the failure of the successive governments to build a long overdue Eastern Suburbs railways, for it was easy to argue that the trams that ‘shot through’, whose speed and madcap progress earned a place in the lexicon of sayings that are essentially Australian, were more than adequate for the run to the beach.

A question we often get asked by our customers is what wrap is best for my photo on canvas? In this article we’ll shed some light on the choices available and how to make this decision.

A wrap, border or bleed are all names for the edge of your stretched canvas print. This is the 3.5cm edge of the canvas that ‘wraps’ around the wooden stretcher frame. Making the right choice of wrap will have a big impact on your photo on canvas.

Blue Horizon Printing offers 5 standard choices plus more if required. These are: Blur wrap, Gallery wrap, Mirror wrap, Plain wrap (white or black). See below for a picture of all 5 styles.

Choices of wrap for canvas print

A Gallery wrap uses the image itself to wrap around the frame. Using a Gallery wrap means that you’ll lose part of the image as it will wrap around the edges of the print. This means that if you have detail at the edge of a canvas that you don’t want to lose from the front of the image then this is probably not the right choice for you.

A mirror wrap is the answer to this problem as it ‘mirrors’ or copies the last 3.5cm of the image and duplicates it around the edge of the canvas print. This work extreemly well in many instances but can occasionally be the wrong choice. (dont worry – we wouldnt actually print an image that looks like the one below, we would inform the customer that it is the wriong choice).

The image below shows an example of a bad and good mirror wrap:

bad gallery wrap

As you can see, the boys face has been ‘mirrored’ around the edge of the canvas print border and has caused the print to look ‘distorted’. Dont worry – we wouldnt actually print an image that looks like the one below, we would inform the customer that it is the wrong choice and advise on a better choice.

The fern canvas print however mirrors the fern fronds and looks great, if this had been a regular gallery wrap a lot of the fern would have been lost around the edges.

Another very popular option is the blur wrap, this is a good choice when neither the gallery or mirrored wrap can be used (often in portrait photography for example). The blurred edge does exactly what the name implies and uses the colours near the edge of the border asnd blurs them into the picture. It is a good alternative to simply keeping the edges plain.

Last but not least you can choose to keep the borders plain white or black (or if you let us know we can offer other colours such as reds, greens etc). The plain wrap is effective for classic reproductions for artwork, for example most of the modern art we offer on the website uses plain white or black borders.

The final decision is always our customers but we are happy to help you make up your mind. If we feel that the wrap choice you have made isnt the right one then we are happy to let our customers know which we believe is a better choice.

Have you been stuck recently trying to buy a present for someone that has pretty much anything you can think of? Are you bored of sending (and receiving) the same presents, things that you aren’t even sure if they want?

If this is the case then we have the solution to your problems right here. A photo on canvas makes the best possible present. It is a thoughtful and personalised present that shows you’ve actually taken the time to think about what they will want, you’ve found a photo that either brings back great memories or will just look great in their home or office. I have NEVER spoken to someone that has received a photo on canvas and NOT been happy!

For Father’s day, a photo of his grandchildren making a mess of their dinner or playing in the garden will be absolutely loved and make the best Fathers day present he could imagine. The Canvas print will on the wall within a day of him receiving it! The perfect Mothers Day present would be a photo of your parents on their wedding day – transformed into a unique work of art, delivered ready to hang straight onto the wall.

Picture the scene, its Christmas day, your Gran is opening a large flat parcel wrapped up in colourful wrapping paper, she opens it and it’s a photo of you and all your siblings when you were young, see the smile spread across her face. Now that is a present she wasn’t expecting that will not be discarded to the bottom of the cupboard in a few days.

Why buy your sister a camera that she may or may not use when instead you could instead have a photo of her dog ‘Bruno’ transformed into a colourful Andy Warhol Style Pop art portrait, a photo of a young child or even a dog can make sensational Warhol style pop art using the traditional Marilyn Monroe pop art styles or more modern bright colours and styles.

Ordering your photo on canvas could not be any easier; to place your order simply logon to http://www.bluehorizonprinting.com.au/ and use the ordering system, upload your photo, select the size and shape, pay for the order and you are done, the whole order will take just 5 minutes. One week later you’re photo on canvas will be at your door, ready to hang straight on the wall!

We also offer a massive range of canvas art prints ranging from amazing photos of Sydney’s beaches through to our replica 1950’s tram and bus scroll art, these vintage banner artworks add a classical feel to any modern home or office and are the latest in home decor.

Some colours just launch themselves out of a photograph than others. The most powerful of all the hues is without a doubt red. Just a tiny splash of crimson in an image is enough to draw the eye. Using this trick to your advantage can have strong results. A red object such as a rose in the foreground of your composition can transform an otherwise uninspiring photograph into a great one.

Red Poppy Field

Others colours that are capable of this same effect are yellows and pinks. Often a subject works well in photographs because of the use of these vivid hues. Often an identical object in a more neutral colour will leave the image looking very ordinary and without a central feature.

Luckily a photographer can deliberately seek out these colours and use them to create a composition. Even if it’s as simple as asking a model you are photographing to wear a pink scarf as opposed to a blue one. Seek red objects to add to an image instead of a grey. Used well, this trick can add a strong focal point to your picture however you have to be careful to avoid detracting from the main focus of the shot if the focus is not the red/pink/yellow feature.

This same rule works well when selecting a photograph to display such as print on canvas, or if you are buying artwork. You might experiment with a series of three images for example, with one being red and the other two less striking colours. The two, less vibrant panels will lead the eye to the central image causing a striking and memorable overall effect.

Just as some colours, such as reds and yellows scream out to be noticed, others tend to recede into the distance. Blues and greens, for example, often appear to blend into the background. Combining colours from these dominant and recessive groups can be a powerful way of adding more depth and drama to your pictures.

Choosing Pairs of colours to create impact has to be done with care, there is always the danger that they will clash. The best effect is usually achieved by combining complementary colours. Pairing Red and Green is a potent combination, as is Orange and Blue, or purple and yellow.

Unfortunately photographers can rarely be as fussy with the palettes as painters – it is usually simply just a case of noticing when two colours in a scene complement each other well and taking the photograph in such as way as to pair the two. The blues of the sea and the skye are often a useful backdrop as they provide a recessive, non-competing, and extensive backdrop against which to frame brightly coloured subjects.
